Walk into any supermarket in Malaysia today and you will find bags labelled "eco-friendly," "biodegradable," or "compostable." The problem: these terms mean very different things. Some are backed by science. Others are marketing. Understanding the difference matters — both for the environment and for your wallet.

What does compostable mean?

A certified compostable bag is made from plant-based materials — typically polylactic acid (PLA), cornstarch, cassava, or sugarcane — and is engineered to fully break down into water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter under specific conditions. It leaves no toxic residue and no microplastics behind.

The keyword here is *certified*. A bag claiming to be compostable without a recognised third-party certification may not actually compost safely. Look for internationally recognised marks such as TÜV Austria OK Compost Home, EN 13432 (Europe), ASTM D6400 (USA), or AS4736 (Australia). In Malaysia, the **MyHijau** label issued by the Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) is the trusted local benchmark.

What does biodegradable actually mean?

Here is where it gets tricky. "Biodegradable" simply means a material can be broken down by microorganisms. But it says nothing about how long that takes, under what conditions, or what it leaves behind.

Some biodegradable plastics are made from fossil fuels. They will technically degrade — eventually — but the process can take decades and may produce harmful residues. A fossil-fuel-based biodegradable bag is not meaningfully better than a conventional plastic bag in the context of Malaysian landfills.

Why oxo-degradable bags are a serious problem

Oxo-degradable plastics are conventional petroleum-based plastics with a chemical additive that makes them fragment faster when exposed to heat, light, or oxygen. This sounds better. It is not.

Oxo-degradable plastics do not biodegrade properly — they break into microplastics. These tiny particles infiltrate soil, waterways, seafood, and eventually the human body. They are also unsuitable for composting and contaminate plastic recycling streams. Many cheap "eco" bags sold in Malaysian wet markets or online are oxo-degradable. They look and feel similar to compostable bags but carry none of the environmental benefit.

How to choose the right bag

Before buying, ask three questions:

1. Is it third-party certified? Look for TÜV Austria, BPI, MyHijau, or equivalent marks. 2. What is it made from? Plant-based materials like cornstarch, PLA, or cassava are the right answer. 3. Home or industrial compost? Home compostable bags are more practical in Malaysia, where industrial composting infrastructure is still limited.

If a bag cannot clearly answer all three questions, leave it on the shelf.
