Malaysia holds a global record no one wants. A study published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal found that Malaysians ingest an average of **502.3mg of microplastics per person per day** — the highest rate across 109 countries examined. Malaysia is also among the top 10 countries for microplastic inhalation, at an estimated 494,000 particles per person per day.

This is not a distant future risk. It is happening now, and it is connected directly to how Malaysia manages plastic waste.

How microplastics get into Malaysian food

The process is straightforward. Plastic waste — bags, packaging, bottles — enters rivers and coastal waters. It degrades into particles smaller than 5mm (microplastics), which are ingested by marine organisms from plankton to fish. When Malaysians eat those fish, they consume the microplastics too.

More than 50% of Malaysia's microplastic consumption comes from fish — a striking figure in a country with one of Asia's highest per-capita seafood diets. Researchers from the National University of Defence Technology (China) and Cornell University, who authored the study, noted that "rapidly industrialising countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam topped the microplastic uptake globally, originating from high seafood consumption."

Microplastics have also been detected in Malaysian drinking water. Research on river basins including Sungai Langat, Sungai Kelantan, Sungai Klang, and Sungai Sarawak showed microplastic concentrations ranging from 179.6 to 4,541.4 particles per litre on average, according to findings by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM).

What microplastics do to the human body

There are three main categories of health risk:

Chemical risk:

Plastics leach chemicals including Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to metabolic disorders, fertility issues, and certain cancers. NAHRIM director-general Mohd Zaki Mat Amin warned that as plastics degrade, "they release chemical compounds such as BPA that could pose serious health risks to anything ingesting it, which will then come back to humans as we eat seafood."

Physical risk:

Microplastic particles can accumulate in human organs after passing through the gastrointestinal system. Evidence increasingly links prolonged exposure to hormone imbalance and chronic disease.

Microbial risk:

Microplastics can carry and transmit harmful pathogens.

What the Malaysian government is doing

The Malaysian Medical Association president Dr Azizan Abdul Aziz called for laws to control plastic production and encourage biodegradable materials. Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof announced in July 2024 that an inter-ministerial committee would be formed to tackle microplastics holistically across all relevant ministries and local councils.

What you can do

The researchers' recommendation is clear: removing plastic debris from freshwater and saltwater environments through better waste management is the most effective lever. At the household level, switching from conventional plastic bin bags to certified compostable bags is one of the most direct ways to reduce the amount of plastic entering Malaysia's waterway and waste system.
